Teacher Media Training
PODCASTING COURSE AT PIE (University of the Arts), 2010.
Below is my students’ work in “Podcasting as Documentary,” a course I teach in the Professional Institute for Educators (PIE) at the University of the Arts (Phila). The students here are teachers. PIE specializes in teaching educators how to use the arts and creative media in the classroom.
This was a 5-day, all-day workshop, in which each student, sometimes in teams, produced three finished pieces.
Sound Studio to edit tape; IPhoto to arrange the slideshow; and Garage Band to assemble, sync photos, add narration, efx, and compose music. I chose Garage Band because this is an intro course, and the application comes standard in Macs in schools. A second-tier course might use LightBox, ProTools, and do the sync/efx in Final Cut.
Here’s my syllabus: podcasting syllabus 2010.

YOUTH STUDY CENTER
Joyce Randell as a math teacher in the High School at the Youth Study Center, where I’ve been teaching audio/podcasting as part of the Prime Movers Journalism Program and the Picasso Project since Fall 2007. As of September 2009, we’ve created over 100 audio recordings and a score of video podcasts – exclusively for and by the students in the detention center. (Available to educators on request.) Here is their teacher Joyce’s two podcasts about her trip to Japan, which are also found on the School District Website,
